The Divine Paradox News Navigator

The Divine Paradox News Navigator is a tool designed to help us recognize the Universal Principles of Life.  For it says in the Emerald Tablet of Hermes:

That which is above is as that which is below,
and that which is below is as that which is above.
Its power be integrating if it be turned into earth.

One meaning of this passage is that in order to truly understand and master the Laws of Life, we must not only reach up to comprehend them, but we must also be able to bring them down to earth by discovering their operation in and around us and in all things.   Theory must be grounded in application.

So, where to begin?  The answer is deceptively simple.  We begin to look for evidence of these Laws right where we are, within our current circumstances, interests, problems and desires.  One place where these can be found and studied is in the news:

Concepts

The first work of the hero is to retreat from the world of secondary effects to those causal zones of the psyche where the difficulties really reside, and there to clarify the difficulties, eradicate them in his own case, and break through to the undistorted, direct experience and assimilation of what C. G. Jung called 'the archetypal images.'

___Joseph Campbell, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces"

The Divine Paradox News Navigator has been designed to assist one on the journey into these causal zones to discover these archetypal images.    To this end, the News Navigator provides the following features, which are symbolically related to the mental tools on the Magician's table:

  1. Wand - Will & Initiative:
By providing the news and a set of tools on the same page, the News Navigator places both within the same field of attention.  With this suggestion it thus becomes easier to take the initiative to explore possible relationships between your current field of interest in the news, and the expression of principles lying therein.  Any tool, however, is useless unless you take the initiative to use it.  The key to unlocking your initiative is in finding a topic or news item which truly interests you!

  2. Cup - Imagination:
The News Navigator stimulates the imagination by providing a visual representation of the Universal Principles.  While reading a topic of interest, you can glance down at the Tarot images to see if any of them seem relevant (either relevant to the news item itself or to your own reactions to the topic).  For those familiar with Tarot symbolism, this juxtaposition of imagery encourages association and can lead to intuitions, feelings, and insights.  By clicking on one of these images (called a Tarot Key), additional information is displayed (in the left frame) which can further stimulate the imagination.

  3. Sword - Action:
Once you've selected a particular Tarot Key, information and questions are displayed (in the left frame) which allow you to ask yourself questions of the topic or news article.  By asking questions you can actively probe the deeper structure of the event, problem, or circumstance and refine your mental imagery into specific forms which relate to the subject.  If a question seems relevant, you can select additional information and even meditate on that key to gain additional insights.

  4. Pentacle - Result:
The result of these activities can lead to the discovery of how the Universal Laws of Life are indeed operating in our particular area of interest.   Thus, by coming to understand the principles involved, we arrive at a deeper understanding of our subject, of ourselves,  and of our world.  For those desiring to share their insights with others, the News Navigator also provides access to a message board.

Additionally, for those wanting to get the most out of the News Navigator, we would like to mention this open secret:  What truly opens the door to understanding is the desire to know for the sake of sharing with others.

The Hero's second solemn task and deed therefore is to return then to us, transfigured, and teach the lesson he has learned of life renewed.

___Joseph Campbell

Some Additional Ways to Use the News Navigator:

bulletMeditation on a particular subject of interest.
You can explore literally any topic of interest by using the "search" feature:
  1. Select "Search"
  2. In the search engine, enter key words describing what you wish to investigate, or enter the URL of the site you wish to visit.

bulletObserving our Reactions and learning to release attachment to results.
  1. While reading a topic of interest (in the main frame) a thought, feeling, or desire may come up.
  2. Look at this feeling or reaction.  If we can't stop and recognize the emotional pattern when it comes up then we are likely to act out from it, unknowingly.  Think "See it or be it."
  3. Openly acknowledge your reaction.  Being honest with yourself is crucial.  If you are feeling angry, then say to yourself "I am feeling angry."  If the emotion, thought or desire is a familiar one to you, you can even say "Hello [xxx] my old friend."  Acknowledge your reaction, but do not resist it mentally.
  4. If you can greet this dragon cordially, then you can ask it where it has come from.  Ask yourself what the possible source of this emotion, judgmental thought, or desire could be.
  5. As you're thinking about the possible roots of your reaction, you can select from one or more tarot keys (in the bottom frame) and read about that principle and how it might apply to your thought, feeling, or desire.  If a particular key resonates with you, then there are links provided to allow you to explore it further or meditate on it.
  6. If you wish, you can ask this particular dragon what it wants, and meditate on that.
  7. Then bid your dragon well, and say good bye to it.  Let it go gently and with feelings of good will.
  8. Gently bring your attention back to your original to the topic of interest and continue reading as before...

Finally, from Joseph Campbell:
...for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known; we have only to follow the thread of the hero-path.  And where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to slay another, we shall slay ourselves; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence; where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world.
