Magic

Magic

The Tarot keys symbolize aspects of consciousness that can manifest in three ways: Integrative (positive), sustaining (neutral), and disintegrative (negative). With regards to the Magician I can see the principle of attention manifesting in three ways:

SACRED MAGIC
PERSONAL MAGIC
SORCERY (a.k.a. black magic)

SACRED MAGIC: The use of the principle of the Magician to create change in oneself and environment by making oneself into an instrument of divine Will. This is what is pictured in the Magician Tarot Key. You act as a transformer for doing God's Will here on earth by focusing on the good and beautiful with those things that are within your field of influence/attention. Mother Teresa is an example of a person focusing on the good and strengthening it to help others in need.  Theurgy is another example.

PERSONAL MAGIC: The use of the principle of attention to create a change in oneself or environment based on ethical, but more or less separatist concepts. This includes goal setting, concentration, and most modern psychological techniques whose purpose is the self improvement of one's physical, emotional, and/or mental condition or to obtain greater efficiency.  Secular Self-Improvement.

SORCERY: A negative use of the principle of The Magician, where you make yourself into an instrument of lower forces. This can happen in two ways:

  1. One is when you do not use your power of self-conscious attention. Instead you either passively open yourself up to whatever happens to come in, or you use your attention in a superficial way. By so doing you make yourself into an instrument of elementals, or other lower or unconscious forces. This includes activities that tend to disempower you, and where you give you power up to something, or someone else that is of a lower level of consciousness. Examples include, addictions and negative psychism..
  2. The other way is after having "opened the door" to lower forces, you act (either consciously or unconsciously) as their agent by doing things to disempower others. Examples of this variety include controlling others through either force, propaganda, all types of persuasion, or substances, so as to exploit them and keep them in the state shown by Key 15 (The Devil).

Where do we see these three types of Magician at work?

In Culture and the Arts
(Literature, Film, Painting, Acting, Music, Dance, etc..).

Sacred Art directs the attention (K1) of the observer and gives suggestions (K8) to their subconscious to lift up people's spirits and to strengthen the higher loving aspects of man's beingness (and thus help to break the bondage shown in Key 15).

Pop Art entertains, but it often gives mixed suggestions (K8) by combining aspects of both the sacred and the profane.

Obscene Art, however, directs the attention (K1) to strengthen (K8) the lower animal nature of man (K15).

Is Pasolini Pop Art or Obscene Art? If I saw the movie, I could only answer that question for myself, not others. True Discrimination (Key 6) is the key to knowing what images to eat and what not to!

Manipulators (such as child molesters) exploit and/or control others who are weak and impressionable.   Those who have a Behavior addiction  are not only being in bondage to this activity, but they also allow themselves to become  an agent for lower forces and thus negatively influence others and impact their (1-8-15) development as well.
