Hi, gang. I just wondered how many of you last night watched "60
Minutes" and saw that very courageous Episcopal bishop refute the fairy
tale fundamental Christian dogma of the virgin Birth and J dying for our sins.
The Bishop has said at another time that "it is interesting to realize that
no other world religion requires such a departure from common sense to be a
believer. That 60 minute program was quite astonishing to me--and very
heartening as many of the departed members of his church seemed to be returning
because of his so-called heresy--"not even a Christian" one prelate
said. N.J

N.J.,
I'm not sure of the value here for the esoteric student of following the
theological ins-and-outs of an exoteric religion, other than perhaps as a
meditation on the evolution of group ethos, and how new ideas cause fracture and
spawn offshoots of the original rigidified organism.
Now if Bishop Spong started touting the teachings of the Western Mystery
Tradition, then THAT would be interesting, but it would still only provide a
predictable example of group dynamics - and how new ideas (be they true or not)
cause a group to SEPARATE.
Hell, this is what happens to our human body, when it is exposed to new
ideas! Part of the body reacts in an immune response to destroy the invader, and
part of it accepts. Eventually, either the new foreign invader is killed off, or
the old cells that could not accept it die off (and are flushed out), to be
replaced by new cells which are in harmony with the new environment.
Hmmmm, health concerns for the overall body, must include a means for
effectively removing all those dead cells which get killed off by the new ideas.
Drinking lots of water, and taking a good crap!
This is what the Episcopal Church did to Spong, but in reverse, as it was the
new deviant cells that got flushed out. The Church's white blood cells removed
and excreted him from the body of the larger organism along with those other
"cells" which aligned themselves with him.
So in effect Spong's song acted like a scavenging agent, causing to be removed
from the larger organism those cells which were in alignment with the vibration
of the song - thus allowing these cells to re-group and form another organism
outside of the killing range of the parent organism's immune system. A new
organism which in the future may even replace the original.
So the Spong example, is a better example of a dynamic process, than it is of
any particular theological content - since his new theological statements are
themselves subject to examination and criticism, ad nauseum. And who's looking
for another theology to believe in? Not me.
Being RIGHT leads to dogmatism, rigidification and
Death.
Becoming more Loving, Understanding, Discriminating, Merciful, and Just,
leads to more becoming - LIFE.
So who the F*&k wants to be right? It's more important to be honest, I
think.
