Do What You Want To Do(How does it serve Humanity?)
_________________________________ "To serve humanity" is the broad general spiritual aspiration that every aspirant thinks he SHOULD HAVE. But his/her real goal being worked toward is usually to appear wiser, kinder and generally a superior person. This is very natural--the desire for a specific kind of approbation [praise]. Some want to be admired for their financial sharpness. Some for their skills in conning others. Some for their bullying toughness. Comprende? Joseph_________________________________ Could you elaborate on this a little further, Joseph? I am curious as to how this approbation serves humanity? Why is the real goal the refinement of the ego-personality in your model? Granted, this is perhaps something you have witnessed in your travels through life, however, the conning of others, the bullying toughness of the controlling is not something that comes to mind as a service to humanity. Could you please clarify this for me? Rey _________________________________ Rey, You open up an even larger question. How does "do what you want to do" serve the larger humanity? The average person would see "do what you want to do" and "Serve Humanity" as being two totally opposite things. Another Paradox! RL _________________________________ > How does "do what you want to do" serve the larger humanity? By doing what you want, you are lead to experience just exactly who and what "You" are - as in 'Know Thyself'. Somewhere along that path "You" are taking, you will recognize that the same "I" is behind every action, thought and desire - in every being in the universe. When you do what "YOU" want, you do what "I" want [what the ONE wants]. How does 'that' serve the larger Humanity? Noel _________________________________ It has been said that "the Will of God is revealed in
the desires of men." > So where do we go to learn how to appear wiser, kinder, superior, financially sharp, skilled at conning, and tough in bullying? Interesting that several members suggested that you had to "go" somewhere to learn how to appear wiser, etc. That expresses the common belief that "it" exists in a foreign outside source and you have to go and find it to "get' it. The learning process, IMO, takes place right where you are. Your unconscious desires--reflecting the wants of the Self for you--places you in the exact environment to realize those desires. Trust the process that the Greater Life responds to Its lesser life's wants. I think what we really want as aspirants is to BE more wise, etc. and have it recognized in our interaction with others. That wish for recognition is just a result of feeling separated and unfinished--totally natural and understandable. As we evolve in Self realization we gradually come to judge ourselves as a BEING, rather than through our so called accomplishments. I can remember my cries as a child, "look at me, daddy and mommy" as I turned somersaults in front of them. Recognition demanded. We struggle with cultural shame when we are caught in doing things like boasting that satisfy our need for recognition of our worth. We still do it self-effacingly and modestly with our spiritual victories, but we must tell. At the outset, our self esteem is supported by the opinions of others, "What will the neighbors think" is a powerful limitation of expression for most in our culture. Thieves tell other thieves how skillful they are in stealing. Athletes boast of their feats. If you are a bully you need an admiring audience. Just before she died, Ann asked Master R how she did in this life time. "Better than we expected" was his reply. Unspiritual, in your estimation?? IMO, to be unaware of your natural inclinations and needs is more unfortunate than just being ashamed of them. Joseph _________________________________
JC ************ Joe your statement "do what you want to do" without qualification goes against your own spiritual teaching (Tarot key 5) where it is clearly shown that what one wants must kneel. I am not sure how you could keep misinterpreting this. "Do what you want to do" is a "spiritual recipe for disaster." Jay ************* Jay, Looks like a paradox doesn't it? Here is the answer: One must WANT to kneel. The desire to kneel is but a more refined desire. This is the same desire one expresses when they express a desire to really listen. One must want to listen. Now, how does one get to the point where they are ready to listen? They eventually get to the point where they are willing and ready to listen, by doing what they want (not listening initially), and reaping the consequences. These consequences (pleasure & pain) teach us. In other words, doing what you want leads to the kinds of results which eventually bring about a step-wise refinement of our desires, to the point where we eventually will want to KNOW what the hell is going on. This desire to know will eventually manifest itself as a desire to observe, read, learn, and listen. And by learning to listen we learn what it means to kneel. So you see, not only does "do what you want" not contradict the necessity of kneeling before the Inner Teacher, but "doing what you want" is ESSENTIAL to kneeling. This is because "doing what you want" is the process of refining our desires to the point where we WANT to Kneel. The only way kneeling works is if we truly want to. So, want a quick short-cut to kneeling? "Doing what you want"
will bring you to your knees quicker than anything else. I guarantee
it! Q: Why should I do good things? / Why be good? Examine the WHY of what you want to be and do. "Doing what you want to do" does eventually lead (in theory and In my experience) to wanting to know. Once one comes to understand the importance of their desires to this path of knowledge then one will WANT to start examining their motivations. Q: What am I looking for? JC _________________________________ What I wanted to know: Is or have there been anyone consciously trying to accomplish any degree of transmutation and what did they hope for as a result? Did or do they have a specific demolition target and a phoenix-like result arising--feathers fresh and all in place? I always wondered who the fabled "They" is in "they say." Down to earth anonymous wisdom. Joseph _________________________________ Joseph, "Consciously trying" is like consciously trying to breathe. We can huff and puff, or just let it happen anyway. Transmutation is a natural process which comes from us "getting what we want." RL _________________________________ Now that's what i was hoping to hear. RL, your mother must have an MGM Lion. Side effect of getting what you want: CAUTION, Dangerous results. I still wonder if anyone has thought of this natural process as transmutation. Ann said that one may transmute as few as one or two or as many a hundred patterns in a lifetime. How do you count?. Joseph _________________________________ The spiritual aspirant and the hedonist are both "Doing what they want to do." Different sowing reaps different fruits. Same in kind, just different in degree. The common recommendation would be: Strike with all your might in whatever you choose to do. RL _________________________________ And even failure to try is doing what we want to do. That is the prime, automatic, evolutionary device. We can't avoid expressing ourselves and that involves choice or wanting. At a certain point in becoming aware of the evolutionary nature of our lives, we are impelled to add what seems to be personal volition to the effort, which becomes highly instructive--a fast learning phase. Nothing personal about it, though, all done by Self observing Self.. Wonderful process. Joseph _________________________________ 04 Dec 2001 Joseph, Reviewing an email you sent to the list back in May 2001, You stated that Ann Davies was vehemently against "Do what you want to do." Given this list's general agreement on DWYWTD (Do What You Want To Do), this seems a bit perplexing. Can you share with us what some of these reasonable objections were? Obviously "What do you Want" is a part of BOTA training as it's in lesson 1, but did DWYWTD take it a step further that BOTA was unwilling to promulgate, or was it just too controversial for neophytes? Lesson 1: RL _________________________________ *IMO, Ann was afraid some would take DWYWTD as Holy license to righteously do damage to another if the impulse was there. An excessive maternal protective reaction, IMO. It's all we ever do. This surprised me, too. IMO, The golden rule should precede the consideration of DWYWTD unless you really want to learn the hard way. But that would amount to "Will, under God" wouldn't it? Does that offend? Joseph |
