Conspiracy Theories

08 Aug 2001

[I am reminded ]of my first contact with so called occult organizations in the mid thirties. The mischief/danger of "black magicians" and their proliferation was a major topic of attention then.  Looking over one's shoulder was the mark of an occultist and fear was the real adversary with some students.. It was believed that the Black Magician's were among us and we didn't stop to think about what their motive could be in being "black."  Those were highly unconscious, manipulated days. Evocative mantras were common protective devices.

It seems so ridiculous now that anyone would consciously use their "magical' powers to seduce, gain power over others, etc. Sounds like a bad Disney cartoon. And without thought of retribution!! Of course this is done, but largely unconsciously and without a sense of magic being attached to the effort.  Joseph

Joseph,

This type of conspiracy mentality still exists in many and various UFO groups & New Age discussion groups.

I once attended a woman friend's discussion group, as she was kind enough to publish some of my articles in her local magazine, and one day when she was ranting about how the aliens come down and do all sorts of bad things like abductions, etc.. I asked:

So what's the big deal?

She flew into a rage and exclaimed "...and they put probes up your butt!"

I have witnessed similar behavior in many many New Age type discussion groups. As another example, there was one discussion group I attended where a lady would earnestly show me pictures of clouds and explain how they were in fact UFO mother ships, and that soon these ships would take (certain chosen ones) away from Earth before some great Earth catastrophe which was soon coming.

This phenomenon seems to be some combination of Paranoia + Elementary Metaphysical knowledge manifesting as a group delusional escape fantasy.

Such are the follies of the Half-Wise who having gained a little knowledge, place it in the service of their desires, which are as yet not as refined.

How many cautionary tales are there of this very phenomenon?

In the 1956 Movie "Forbidden Planet", the Ancient civilization of the Krell had attained great intellectual and technical knowledge, yet they self-destructed because their desire nature was not at the same level. They were destroyed by their own "Monsters from the Id." (id=the Shadow, or vital animal soul)

The sorcerer's apprentice scene from Disney's movie "Fantasia."

The myth of Icarus who flew too close to the sun.

The list goes on and on, but let us not forget this one:

The myth of the Garden of Eden where desire & temptation led to the taking of forbidden fruit from the tree of knowledge. With this one, we get closer to the truth. What leads us into temptation DOES deliver us from evil - Eventually - as we learn how to control those very forces which at first appear to be an adversary.

Thus, I think it is a good thing for everyone to experience paranoia at least once. Then one can know it for what it is - an exercise in learning discrimination.

Yea verily, RL, "That" which leads us into temptation also delivers us into understanding and It might have fun in doing it. Glad you connected this universal human tendency with its metaphysical counterpart. Reduces the appearance of special aberration.

I think there were some instances of wish and fear fulfillment in the "victims" of alien interferences, at least some i heard about.  Some victims were fantasizing international attention as their intervention was saving the world!! some of the people i knew were fearfully attributing every uncomfortable surprise to black magicians.  My ex wife among them.  More realistic to blame me.
